I have to go with Don McClean. American Pie is the greatest story told as a song ever but, out of this list Bob
Love all the ones you mentioned, you could add to that list, Donovan, Jim Croce and Cat Stevens, and John Prine.
take care

someone else said don mclean so I’ll go with Jewel. before she went country, she had 2 awesome folk albums. her song Adrian is about a kid who gets into a boating accident and goes into a lifelong coma, all while a friend from his childhood stays beside him all of his years. the song is written like a story and is so haunting. She also has the song Painters, another haunting song about two artists who fall in love and then the guy either drowns or gets struck by lightning.. i dont remember.. if i listen to that song i start crying so whatevs.
also bob dylan.
Well in modern music Anberlin’s lead singer, Jon Foreman, and Incubus’s lead singer are really good song writers.
Harry Chapin is at the top of my list
George Formby

Plus Dylan’s Tangled Up In Blue, Isis, Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts ~ lots more…
How about Frank Zappa.

To go along with all of the greats posted above, I’m going to add Leonard Cohen and Patti Smith
